Is Morocco a good destination for a family holiday?

Morocco works better for families than its reputation suggests, mostly because the good bits are close together.

What children actually enjoy

• Jemaa el-Fna in Marrakech. Musicians, storytellers and food stalls. It is a spectacle before it is a square.
• The Ourika Valley. An hour from Marrakech, with a river, waterfalls at Setti Fatma and a light walk that most children manage.
• Essaouira. A working fishing port, a walled medina and a wide beach.
• Mule and camel rides. Available in the valleys and the desert, and usually the thing they remember.

What to plan around

Two things. Midday heat inland in summer, which is why excursions start early. And transfer days, which are the least interesting part of any itinerary for a child. Shorter regional programmes suit families better than long crossings.

Our six-day Marrakech programme is the one we most often recommend to families: one hotel base, and the variety comes from day trips rather than packing and unpacking.

What it costs for children

On that six-day programme a child travels at 1 890 MAD against 3 780 for an adult, so exactly half, and infants travel free. Reduced child rates apply across our other Morocco programmes too.
